The surprise companion to The National�s April release First Two Pages of Frankenstein, Laugh Track is the band�s most freewheeling, all-hands-on-deck album in years. If Frankenstein represented a rebuilding of trust between group members after 20+ years together, the vibrant, exploratory Laugh Track is both the product of that faith and a new statement of intent. Reveling in the license to radically upend its creative process, The National honed most of this material in live performances on tour, and captured those invigorated versions in impromptu sessions at producer Tucker Martine�s Portland studio. Everything Will Change is the new live album by indie-pop legends The Postal Service. The album documents The Postal Service's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA during their 2013 reunion tour. (The same show was featured in the 2014 feature-length documentary concert film of the same title.) This is the first time the show has been released on CD and vinyl, and the album features "Never Enough Time," which did not appear in the original video release. A collaboration between Benjamin Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (from Dntel), with Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis, The Postal Service released Give Up, their one and only album, in 2003. That record went on to sell over a million copies and most of the band's fans never had the chance to see them perform live. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of Give Up, the band reunited to tour the world. Everything Will Change captures one of the nights when everything did change.

Who knew it would take a cartoon hamburger to kick off a new period of activity for Superchunk? When we recorded �Misfits and Mistakes� for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force soundtrack at Overdub Lane in Durham, we also recorded the first version of �Learned to Surf� which gave us an on-ramp for making new music after 8 years of playing sporadic gigs. It also reminded us what we liked about playing Superchunk songs, whether they�re our own or written by our musical heroes.

This collection covers a lot of ground, from heavy touring years to a pandemic where we made singles and an album at home. One difference between this comp and our first three is that this time span completely falls in the digital age; the distance from a final mix to everyone hearing it is shorter than ever. I�ve always liked artists that were prolific�throwing out singles in between albums when you least expect it. A surprise release from your favorite band is one of the few things that can still bring a little excitement to what can seem like an endless deluge of �content� (puke). Hopefully the wild swings between lo & hi fi and originals and covers on this comp still allow for some coherence and, more importantly, convey what�s FUN about this punk rock thing.

The 4-LP set comes packaged in a slipcase with two exclusive 18� x 24� posters, and the 2-CD set includes a full-color 28-page booklet.

What Do We Do Now is the fifth solo studio LP recorded by J Mascis since 1996. This is obviously not a very aggressive release schedule, but when you figure in the live albums, guest spots, and records done with his various other bands (Dinosaur Jr., The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, and so on), well, to paraphrase Lou Reed, �J's week beats your year.�

What Do We Do Now began to come together during the waning days of the Pandemic. Utilizing his own Bisquiteen Studio, J started working on writing a series of tunes on acoustic with a different dynamic than the stuff he creates for Dino. �When I'm writing for the band,� he says, �I'm always trying to think of doing things Lou and Murph would fit into. For myself, I'm thinking more about what I can do with just an acoustic guitar, even for the leads. Of course, this time, I added full drums and electric leads, although the rhythm parts are still all acoustic. Usually, I try to do the solo stuff more simply so I can play it by myself, but I really wanted to add the drums. Once that started, everything else just fell into place. So it ended up sounding a lot more like a band record. I dunno why I did that exactly, but it's just what happened.�

Two guest musicians are playing this time out; Western Mass local Ken Mauri (of the B52s) plays piano on several tracks. Since J himself has some experience with keys, when asked why he needed a hired gun, he says, �Ken is great, and he plays all the keys. I tried playing some keyboards on the first Fog album, but I'm really only comfortable playing the white notes, so it's kind of limiting. [laughs] Nowadays, I could just turn the pitch on a mini Mellotron to play different sounds, but black keys just seem hard. For whatever reason, I just like banging on the white ones. Seems like it's harder to figure out how to stretch your fingers around the other ones.�

Mauri has no such qualms and plays all the keys very damn well. He sounds especially great on �I Can't Find You,� where he is Jack Nitzsche to J's Neil Young, creating one of the album's loveliest tunes. The other guest musician, Matthew �Doc� Dunn, is also prominent on this track. Dunn's steel guitar manages to both widen and soften the musical edges of the music, giving it a full classicist profile. Dunn is an Ontario-based polymath who J met through Matt Valentine. After J played on Doc's great 2022 Sub Pop single, �Your Feel,� he figured it was time for payback. Both Dunn and Mauri add beautifully to the songs here, helping to transform them from acoustic sketches into full-blown post-core power ballads.

What Do We Do Now is the finest set of solo tunes J has yet penned, and the way they're presented is just about perfect. Asked if he would be touring to support the album, J says he'll be doing some weekend dates, but he probably won't be putting a band together. And I'm sure these songs will sound great solo and acoustic, but the arrangements on this album are truly great and put a cool, different spin on Mascis' instantly recognizable approach to making music.

So, what do we do now? Not sure. But apparently, what J does is to make one of his most killer records ever. Hats off to him.

Legendary indie-rock band Grandaddy has announced a brand new studio album Blu Wav set for release February 16, 2024 via Dangerbird Records. A prolific storyteller, Jason Lytle is inspired by the overwhelming beauty of nature to the mundane moments that spark life�s strongest memories. Introducing pedal steel into the band�s repertoire for the first time, buoyant lead single �Watercooler� comments on the dichotomy of both. It was inspired by having his own outdoorsy rock guy (in both senses of the word) lifestyle while his partner had an office job. Lytle shares, �Most of my relationships have involved girls who worked in office settings. This song is about the end of one, or perhaps a few, of those relationships. Listeners will also notice the pedal steel on this track and eventually on many others from the forthcoming new album. It�s a first for Grandaddy, and I couldn't be more thrilled about this fact.� With the album title Blu Wav meant to be a literal mash-up of �bluegrass� and �new wave�, the new collection has a distinct feel, a uniform vibe, and a somewhat unexpected sound. It was conceived as Grandaddy maestro Jason Lytle was driving through the Nevada desert, and Patti Page�s "Tennessee Waltz" came across the classic country station on the radio. He was immediately intrigued by the possibilities of what it might sound like to keep the slow sway and sweet, simple lyrics of the bluegrass waltz while adding layers of dense synthesizers and the electronics of new wave. It incorporates the lo-fi lushness and sometimes-psychedelic orchestration Grandaddy is known for with Lytle�s first foray into true country. Seven of its 13 songs are waltzes, and as Lytle notes, �there�s an inordinate amount of pedal steel.� Grandaddy recently celebrated their legacy with a series of 20th anniversary reissues including the acclaimed Sumday Twunny box set which earned a Pitchfork �Best New Reissue�. Lytle also contributed vocals to a posthumous Sparklehorse album by request of his friend and fellow psychedelic pop auteur Mark Linkous� family. Grandaddy has released five official LPs, most recently 2017�s Last Place. Grandaddy members include Jason Lytle, Aaron Burtch, Jim Fairchild, Tim Dryden, and the late Kevin Garcia, who passed away in 2017.

Green Day�s third studio album Dookie was released in February 1994, and has since sold over 15 million copies worldwide, including 10 million in the US (RIAA Diamond certified). The album is an iconic punk-rock-pop masterpiece and one of the most influential and defining albums of the 1990�s. It spawned five hit singles that are still hugely popular songs: �Longview�, �Basket Case�, �Welcome to Paradise�, �When I Come Around�, and �She�.

Limited Edition Super Deluxe Box Sets (vinyl and CD) will be released on September 29, 2023, to celebrate the 30^th Anniversary of this landmark album.

2023 Marks forty years since Tom Waits released�Swordfishtrombones,�ushering in a new and critically acclaimed musical era for Waits and his longtime songwriting and production partner, Brennan.�Waits went from �70�s-era �bluesy, boozy� wordsmith and melodist with seven albums behind him to sound sculptor, miner of the subconscious, abstract orchestrator, sonic cubist�while retaining his innate lyricism, melodic invention, humanity. As he put it in a 1983 interview: �I tried to listen to the noise in my head and invent some junkyard orchestral deviation�a mutant apparatus to drive this noise into a wreck collection.� �It�s a Waits-arranged pastiche, a variety of atmospheres from different sound planets. There is the warped, marching-army-ants music of �Underground,� an impressionist chant about people living below cities, but there was also the poignancy of the spare piano ballad, �Soldier�s Things,� the good bar yarn, �Frank�s Wild Years�, the tender, minimalist paean to Waits� wife and muse, Kathleen, �Johnsburg, Illinois,� and the raggedy anthem to neighborhood chaos, �In the Neighborhood.�

Originally released in 1987 on Island Records, Franks Wild Years is Tom Waits� 10th studio album. Titled for a play of the same name and authored by Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan, Franks Wild Years was performed by Chicago�s Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1986.�Franks Wild Years�is an iteration of the track �Frank�s Wild Years� from Waits� 1983 album�Swordfishtrombones.

The album divides the story neatly into two acts and although titled �un operachi romantic�, there is no opera in�Franks. There is a hilarious touch of operatic styling by Waits himself in the song �Temptation.� His vocal character varies wildly throughout the work�s 17 songs, and is no more impressive than when the gruff, growly singer turns to impeccable Sinatra-esque phrasing on the Vegas number, �Straight To The Top.� While�Franks�featured a 14-member cast on stage, the album is all-Waits�yet suggests a multitude of characters by virtue of his chameleon vocals. The album is a startling group of lost dreams, bad dreams, dreams that might not even�be�dreams. The music is nightmarish, ethereal, beautiful. Think broken calliopes played by genius children, horns played at dawn in a graveyard, banjos leaking through practice room walls. Titles evoke Frank�s dime-store Odyssey:� �Straight To The Top,� �Blow Wind Blow,� �Temptation,� �I�ll Be Gone.���NME�ranked the work the number five album of 1987.

Both as a solo artist and as one-half of She & Him, M. Ward established himself with warm,�analog-minded releases like 2003�s Transfiguration of Vincent and 2006�s Post-War before joining forces with singer/actress Zooey Deschanel to form the highly successful indie�pop duo She & Him in 2008. Over the following decade, Ward split his time between projects, releasing a 2009 album with indie supergroup Monsters of Folk, several high-profile�albums with Deschanel including She & Him�s Columbia-issued 2014 set Classics, and�critically acclaimed solo releases like 2009�s Hold Time, 2012�s A Wasteland Companion,�and 2018�s What a Wonderful Industry. Ward kicked off the next decade with a deeply�atmospheric set called Migration Stories and a Billie Holiday covers album Think of Spring�most recently.

These limited-edition black vinyl versions have been mastered by long-time Who engineer Jon Astley and cut for vinyl by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios with a half-speed mastering technique which produces a superior vinyl cut and are packaged in original sleeves with obi strips and certificates of authenticity. �Rough Mix� is presented in a gatefold sleeve.

Kristian Matsson has never remained in one place for very long. Having spent much of the�last decade touring around the world as The Tallest Man on Earth, Matsson has captivated�audiences using, as The New York Times describes, �every inch of his long guitar cord to�roam the stage: darting around, crouching, stretching, hip-twitching, perching briefly and�jittering away...Mr. Matsson is a guitar-slinger rooted in folk, and his songs are troubadour�ballads at heart.�

Dear Reader,�About a year or two ago, Naomi Yang (of Galaxie 500) reached out to me�after she rediscovered a video that we had made together in 2011, during the�making of Tramp, just before the album�s release. It was for the song Serpents.�The timing was uncanny, approaching the anniversary of Tramp. Thinking�about my time in New York while in the bubble of Los Angeles and my�home. Thinking about how restless I was, and now settled down and stable.�Thinking about how Aaron Dessner took a chance on me after I messaged�him with a fury of demos. He could see through the hiss and crappy vocals�on my GarageBand demos, and that I had something to say. He gave me the�confidence to be loud and to scream my rage and feel founded and justified�in my own pain. He gave me more tools to find catharsis in my work. I have�carried that with me ever since.�

Being on the west coast the last two years, I look back on my community�in New York and am forever grateful. I had so many friends and peers step�up and help me unfold these demos. The album that it became. The group's third studio release, Buhloone Mindstate released on September 21, 1993,�saw the group evolve into a new sound as they continued to grow stylistically and musically. There were several moments on the album which proved the band had matured. "I Be Blowin'" was a departure as the track was an instrumental featuring saxophone playing by Maceo Parker. The introspective "I Am I Be" showed de la Soul at their most self-referential to date. "Long Island Wildin'" was a collaboration with Japanese hip hop artists Kan Takagi (Major Force) and trio Scha Dara Parr (SDP). The album's first single, "Breakadawn", used a sample of Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It" and Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm". de La Soul collaborated for the first time with Gang Starr's Guru on "Patti Dooke", and female MC Shortie No Mas who was prominent on many tracks on the album and showcased particularly on "In The Woods". The album ended with an old school Biz Markie collaboration called "Stone Age".

Moby�s second album on Deutsche Grammophon following 2021�s Reprise. Digging further into his catalog, Moby has reimagined fifteen of some if his most iconic tracks for his new album, Resound NYC. And then, as Everett has done on recent albums by The War on Drugs and Kacey Musgraves, he spent an obsessive amount of time alongside Alvvays filling in the cracks, roughing up the surfaces, and mixing the results. This hybridized approach allowed the band to harness each song's absolute core, then grace it with texture and depth.

To mark the 65th anniversary of the album's recording, Blue Train will be released in two special editions as part of Blue Note's acclaimed Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series: a 1-LP mono pressing of the original album and a 2-LP stereo pressing of Blue Train: The Complete Masters which includes a second disc of alternate and incomplete takes, four of which have never been released before, and none of which have been available previously on vinyl. The 2-LP set comes with a bound booklet featuring session photos by Francis Wolff and an essay by Coltrane expert Ashley Kahn.

The late-1960s and early-1970s were a wildly creative period for Bobby Hutcherson with the vibraphonist freely exploring a wide range of stylistic possibilities from post-bop and the avant-garde to fusion and Latin Jazz. The cutting-edge 1969 session Medina-which wouldn't be first released until 1980 as part of the LT Series-documented one of Hutcherson's most remarkable band line-ups featuring two of his frequent collaborators-Harold Land on tenor saxophone and flute and Joe Chambers on drums-along with Stanley Cowell on piano and Reggie Johnson on bass. The set presented a pair of original compositions each by Hutcherson, Cowell, and Chambers that explored a variety of moods from the churning rhythms of "Avis" and "Medina" to the more atmospheric realms of "Comes Spring" and "Orientale."

We had a conversation recently where we realized that we've been a band for almost 10 years. When we started Wild Rivers way back when, we had never played a real concert before. When we made our first record it was our first time stepping into a real studio. We barely even knew each other when we started this band. Since then we've played a thousand shows, recorded over 30 songs, and become a family.When we set out to record 'Never Better', we felt like we were at a new stage of the band. By that point, we'd put in the hours and all began to feel totally self assured in what we were about to do. We wanted to bring everything we've learned over the years and all that we've been through as a group to the project. We chose to trust our guts and move quickly and confidently in every decision, second guessing ourselves as little as possible. In having this mindset, we were able to completely let loose and go deeper into the process, finding new ways of recording live, swapping instruments, and turning these songs on their heads. We couldn't have made this record a few years ago.We approached this record with the mindset, 'this is who we are'. We aren't pretending to be something we're not, or trying to sound like anyone else. We wanted it to feel easy. We wanted the stories to be real. We wanted to show our true selves as best we could. We're proud of who we've become as people and as a team. We truly feel like we're having the most fun with music that we've ever had, and in the most exciting stage of our lives. We're never better.

Recorded in 1956 for producer Tom Wilson's short-lived Boston-based label Transition Records, Byrd Blows On Beacon Hill presented trumpeter Donald Byrd in a relaxed and intimate quartet setting with his frequent collaborator Doug Watkins on bass along with Boston area musicians Ray Santisi on piano and Jim Zitano on drums. The standards heavy set was captured on a rainy Spring afternoon in the Beacon Hill home of engineer Steve Fassett which provided a casual atmosphere that gave the album both it's title and it's easy-going charm. Byrd is at his lyrical best on Joe Sullivan's tune "Little Rock Getaway" as well versions of "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," "If I Love Again," and "Stella by Starlight." The trumpeter lays out to let the trio shine on "People Will Say We're in Love" and "What's New."

In 1999, the same year that Jason Moran released his debut recording Soundtrack To Human Motion, the pianist and composer also joined New Directions, a band made up of young stars from the Blue Note roster. At the core of New Directions was the genesis of a rhythm section-with Moran, bassist Tarus Mateen, and drummer Nasheet Waits-that would go on to become one of the most enduringly creative and acclaimed piano trios in jazz. The Bandwagon made their first recording as a trio with Facing Left in 2000 and has been the foundation of the majority of Moran's artistic statements since. On his 2010 album Ten, Moran celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Bandwagon with an assured album that was a snapshot of a mature band with a decade of shared musical experience from which to draw. In addition to provocative originals the album presented singular interpretations of pieces by Thelonious Monk, Jaki Byard, Leonard Bernstein, and Conlon Nancarrow. This first-time vinyl release includes the bonus track "Thelonious" previously only available in Japan.

After emerging from Terence Blanchard's band, pianist Aaron Parks made his own Blue Note debut in 2008 with Invisible Cinema, a striking album that has only grown in it's influence of the modern jazz landscape since it's release. Featuring a quartet with guitarist Mike Moreno, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland, the music drew inspiration from Wayne Shorter, Radiohead, and more. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

For over 20 years, The Decemberists have been one of the most original, daring, and thrilling American rock bands. On her new album, Sunset Drive, Denitia shares her story of going after something new � a life back in Nashville, where she attended college, immersed in both the city�s roots music scene and the community of the artist collective Black Opry � while experiencing the menagerie of emotions that come with leaving behind what you knew and starting over. Across the album, she draws from the country and alternative rock music she listened to growing up outside of Houston; the songs of artists such as the Eagles, Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, and Neil Young, ever present in her life; and the decade she spent entrenched in Brooklyn�s indie music scene. Denitia�s music has been featured in the films Nanny and The Invitation, as well as in the series Better Things (FX), Broad City (Comedy Central), Dear White People (Netflix), Shrinking (Apple TV+), and The Terminal List (Amazon). She has toured extensively with the Black Opry Revue; been invited to perform at the National Museum of African American Music and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville; and shared stages with Jason Isbell, Amythyst Kiah, Joy Oladokun, and Allison Russell, among other artists. In 2023, Denitia earned one of five spots in a residency hosted by the Black Opry and WXPN, was named to Rissi Palmer�s Color Me Country class, and was one of three artists selected for CMT and mtheory�s Equal Access cohort. And the momentum has continued in 2024: Denitia is one of CMT�s 2024 Next Women of Country; was named an artist to watch by the Nashville Scene in January; is making her Grand Ole Opry debut in late June; and will open shows for Mickey Guyton in the fall.

Eels, the ever-changing critically acclaimed project of principal singer/songwriter E (Mark Oliver Everett), have released 14 studio albums since their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak. The new album, Eels Time! Was recorded between Los Feliz, California and Dublin, Ireland. It consists of twelve brand new tracks with some of E's most introspective and personal material in recent years, and features collaborations with American musician and actor Tyson Ritter.

Recorded in 1956 for producer Tom Wilson�s short-lived Boston-based label Transition Records,�Watkins At Large�was the first of only two albums that the great bassist�Doug Watkins�would make as a leader. The Detroit native had moved to New York and begun to garner recognition for his contributions to the Art Blakey-Horace Silver co-led iteration of the Jazz Messengers as well as Bud Powell�s trio when Wilson decided to give him the opportunity to front his own recording date. Along with a first-rate ensemble featuring trumpeter�Donald Byrd, tenor saxophonist�Hank Mobley, guitarist�Kenny Burrell, pianist�Duke Jordan, and drummer�Art Taylor, Watkins swings through a stellar set of blues, ballads, and more including originals written by Jordan, Burrell, and Thad Jones.

Kenny Dorham�added stellar entries to the catalogs of Blue Note, Riverside, and New Jazz throughout the 1950s as he solidified his reputation as a leading trumpeter and composer on the jazz scene. He began 1961 in the studio for Blue Note recording his excellent album�Whistle Stop�and later that year cut his first date for Pacific Jazz,�Inta Somethin�, a spirited live recording that captured Dorham leading a quintet with alto saxophonist�Jackie McLean, pianist�Walter Bishop Jr., bassist�Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer�Art Taylor�at The Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. The band is firing on all cylinders throughout this set of four standards bookended by the Dorham originals �Us� and �San Francisco Beat.� A buoyant version of �It Could Happen To You� is performed quartet as a Dorham showcase, while the trumpeter lays out on �Let�s Face The Music And Dance� and �Lover Man� to give the spotlight to McLean.
